How We Help Families Feel Involved and Reassured

a family guide

The decision to move a loved one into residential or nursing care is often accompanied by an overwhelming sense of guilt and worry. Families often wonder whether the family member will feel alone.

At Oakwood House, we want to reassure you that choosing our home is not the end of your journey together, it’s a positive shift in responsibility that allows you to focus purely on being a loving family member again. We operate on a foundation of partnership and transparency, ensuring you remain a vital part of your loved one’s life.

an open door and flexible visits policy

We believe that Oakwood House is the home of our residents, and by extension, it is a welcoming space for their families. There are no restrictive visiting hours.

  • It’s Their Home: We encourage an open-door policy. You are welcome to visit freely, whether it’s for a quick coffee, to share a meal, or simply to sit quietly together.
  • Time and Space: Our bright communal spaces, quiet lounges, and peaceful gardens offer plenty of welcoming areas for private chats and quality time.
  • Joining In: We encourage families to take part in our lively Activities Programme. Whether it’s joining the Garden Social Club, sharing a meal, or even attending a live performance, seeing your loved one engaged and happy is the greatest reassurance we can offer.

clear and compassionate communication

Our commitment is to keep you informed about every aspect of your loved one’s well-being, as we understand how important communication is.

  • Dedicated Updates: Communication is a two-way street. Our compassionate and highly qualified team ensures you receive regular updates on health, mood, and daily life. You will be kept informed about anything that may cause concern.
  • The Care Partnership: You know your loved one best. We work closely with you as part of the care team, seeking your input on their needs, preferences, and routines. Our 24-hour support means a member of our team is always available to talk.
  • Peace of Mind: Knowing that experienced, professional staff are managing complex health needs and monitoring your loved one’s comfort around the clock allows you to step away from the role of primary caregiver and simply be present.

hear from our families

The trust families place in us is our greatest honour. Nothing speaks louder than the experience of others who have navigated this same path.

Granddaughter of a resident:

My grandad has been a resident at Oakwood House for a while now and I cannot praise the staff enough for the level of care he has received. It’s so uplifting to see him so happy and healthy; it reminds me of how he used to be. We went to Oakwood House for the open day and everyone there was so helpful, friendly and up for fun!

daughter of a resident:

Mum has had a stroke and since going to the home, we always get a friendly welcome from reception or front house. When we ask staff for anything it’s done straight away, nothing is too much trouble. Our visits are so much nicer as we know mum is being really cared for.

Choosing Oakwood House means choosing a partner in care. We are here to support your loved one, and just as importantly, we are here to support you. We want you to feel free to enjoy the time you have together, without the weight of worry or guilt.

If you have any questions about how your family can remain involved, please don’t hesitate to Call us on 01603 361 417 to discuss how we can create a welcoming and reassuring partnership.
